Appalling

Currently I'm writhing a lesson plan on the Holocaust. I'm appalled by the warning that accompanied this assignment. Yes, the holocaust is a sad thing and aspects of it are to extreme for small children, but I was warned that by teaching this subject to middle and high school I might be "offending" families. These family are not worried about the graphic nature of the holocaust, the bloodshed, 6 million Jews, Gypsys, Homos, unwed mothers, Catholics, and other "retrobates" that were murdered, no they want to deny the whole thing exits.
More appalling to me still are the people who think hate and genocide only happened in Germany 6o+ years ago. They forget (or never knew) that President Clinton ignored the "ethnic Cleansing" of Rwanda. In Fact, the white house had a moratorium on the word "Genocide" because it might outrage enough people who would demand action. After Mogadishu we were done with Africa.
What about the atrocities in our country? Again I'm appalled about the overwhelming ignorance of the Tuskegee Project (read about it on the History of Science Paper http://www1.umn.edu/scitech/tuskegee.htm) Even here in Colorado, north of Fort Collins was a Japanese Internment Camp. The southern Poverty Law center currently tracks 10 hate groups here in Colorado (.http://www.tolerance.org/maps/hate/state.jsp?S=CO&m=3) We have more then any of our neighboring states (except Oklahoma). Yes, we do have more people then Wyo (with a recognized 3 groups), but we still have more then Washington State and Oregon, states which are infamous for their hate groups.

People will always find someone to hate, someone to blame their problems on, someone to think of as less than human. They have to feel superior to someone, so they won't have to recognize just how inferior they themselves are.

This is what makes the current war so appalling: While it is true there were human rights violations in Iraq, and it did much evil towards the ethnic groups within its boarders, it pales in comparison to Darfour (spelling?), and I am sure there are many other places that could have used American help, but are getting nothing. Sadly, those countries don't have oil, so they get shunted aside.

Anybody up for a move to Canadia?
